GMIT Hotel School students have won an impressive 24 medals — eight gold, eight silver, and eight bronze — in the national Panel of Chefs CATEX competition, held in Dublin recently.

With a dedicated hotel school offering degree programmes in everything from culinary arts to event management, and catering facilities that few can match, GMIT is probably the best place in the country from which to launch a successful career in the hospitality sector.

Local award winning chef, Anthony Kelly of the Riverside Restaurant, Charlestown, will host a cookery demonstration in The Park Hotel, Kiltimagh, on Monday November 15 at 8.30pm. Ticket price is €10.

As the HSE and pharmacy dispute continues, many Mayo patients are left stranded without medication as the two HSE-operated pharmacies, which are part of the health services contingency plan, fail to provide necessary medication when needed. Patients who are not under the State drugs scheme were also left trying to find an open pharmacy in the county as pharmacists staged a protest about the HSE not entering into an agreement with them.

Simon took time out from his current hectic schedule of photoshoots and national press interviews to speak to the Mayo Advertiser about how he came to audition for such a show and his “crazy” journey along the way.
